Chickadees are Year-Round Residents

Black Capped Chickadee

Black capped chickadees are one of the most gregarious birds in the north woods.  They are curious and easily attracted to feeders and, if you can hold still with your arm out and initially avoid direct eye contact, will be lured to a handful of sunflower seeds, and will return for more.   While in the woods, I have often been in the path of a small group of chickadees flitting from stump to limb, winging their way to some unknown destination, and picking morsels from the bark of trees or leaves of ground plants.  Seeing them come, I'll freeze, and more often than not will be visited by at least one of them.  It's a wonderful feeling of oneness with nature.
